Finally we´ve arrived in Patagonia! How marvellous! It´s definitely more my kind of climate, the end of summer, still some rain (and heavy as you can see on the photo above), but everything is better than suffering on the bike in the desert without shadow, nor any curves! So we are on the little mystic island of Chiloé at the moment, which reminds me a lot of the Channel Islands, Ireland or even Sweden, Norway... we enjoy the old, ancient forests on little country roads (concrete, what a luxury!) and admire beautiful flowers, butterflies and birds. There are only wooden houses on stilts on this island, where there was the last colony of the Spanish conquerers, which finally were conquered themselves by the Chilean revolution... Nevertheless they seemed to have mixed quite well with the natives and were even well-visited by German Jesuites with their sweet little wooden churches, too.
Tomorrow initally we planned to set over to the continent by ferry, but like always in South America, there shouldn´t be too much of a hurry. The ferry connects the end of the Panamericana with the beginning of the 1000km long Carretera Austral which leads to the southern end of Chile, only goes twice a week, scheduled for tomorrow, but well, maybe the day after.... Thus we will spend my birthday on the ferry enjoying the terrific view of the snow-covered volcanoes on the main land and doing some whale watching. Seeing a great blue would be certainly a wonderful birthday present!!!
